Duarte
& Bastos sells polished and cut Alexandrite in all formats and in several
sizes, using a first-rate stock, which is flawless and guaranteed to be authentic.
Alexandrite is considered a collector's gemstone thanks
to its extreme beauty and rarity. Its most notable characteristic is that it
changes color
when reacting to light. In daylight, its original color is green, but under
the light of an incandescent lamp it becomes red. It is usually polished in
oval, round shapes, in mixed carves and stepped facets. Considering the extreme
rarity of this gem, stones with inclusions are well accepted by the market,
however purity is highly valued.
Attempts to imitate Alexandrite have been
done in the past with the use of Spinels and synthetic Corundum, obtaining very
modest results. More recently, synthetic Alexandrite has been produced only
for industrial use, which makes these even rarer than the natural gemstone.
When comparing to the Garnet Grossular, a stone that also changes color, the
differentiation must be made by observing birefringence, since the Garnet is
monorefringent.
