The Emerald may be confused with the green Tourmaline, however, by observing the distinct pleochroism in the Tourmaline, it is possible to make the distinction with certainty. Synthetic Emerald production has progressed greatly in the last few years. But differentiation between natural and synthetic stones can be achieved by observing the inclusions and the transparency under ultra-

violet light, where synthetics are generally more transparent.     Specimens of beautiful color and weight superior to 2 carats are among the most valuable of gemstones and may exceed the value of a diamond.

    The Emerald, the noblest stone of the Beryl group, is a gemstone of incomparable green and vitreous shine. It always has inclusions that, in more valuable Emeralds, are very tenuous and unnoticeable to the naked eye. The most common cut is the stepped facets, but there are also oval shapes, pear shapes (teardrops), round, and mixed carves, among others.
